Change the Top Google Search Result for Your Name in 60 Seconds

Norton appears to be branching out from standard security into reputation management. The company has introduced a new tool called Norton Top Search that lets you control the top search result for your name, for free.To change your top search result, all you need to do is pick a URL that you would like to pop up first when people search your name.

The form to do so, found here looks like this:

After inputting your desired URL, Norton then shows you how the search result will eventually look:

Then the site asks you to verify your identity via Facebook. After that, you receive the following message: “Congratulations! Your online reputation is now protected. You will receive an email in a couple of days when your Top Search Result has been approved and published.” Whether that will be the case remains to be seen. The program appears to use Google’s AdWords to change the search results at no cost to the user.

Norton isn’t the only firm offering online reputation management tools, though. Google introduced another free tool called “Me on the Web” last year that claims to do the same thing.

What do you think? Are you eager to control the search results for your name? Sound off in the comments.

Hey Brian, nice tip on this tool personal name online reputation. I haven’t heard of it until you mentioned it. Haven’t heard of “me on the web” from Google either. Checking that out next.

  2. We thank thee of the appoint of the Online as thee of the Good acts.

  3. Thanks for the info Brian, I’ll have to give it a look. I wonder if it works for Businesses as well… Perhaps a service to provide for Offline clients???

  4. Brian, This is awesome. I love that I have control of my name on the web. I’m eager to check it out.

  5. Thanks for this. Is this afeature that will only work for people who use a Norton product that integrates a safe search facility?

    • I think it will work for everyone. It looks like they will probably be running Adwords ads on your name.

They run very, very cheap…and probably testing to see if this is a good lead gen method.

Didn’t know if my previous comment got accepted.

Brian, do you think that this will last for free? What are your thoughts on Norton sending unique ‘client ip’s’ out to query the search engines to shift the algorithms?

    • I’m guessing that it will only last a certain period of time.

They are probably buying ads, and will just run it for a certain # of clicks, or for set amount of time.

  9. Looking at the Norton’s terms, the ad will disappear after it has been clicked on 5 times, so don’t go clicking on your ad:-)

  10. For Twitter and face book and Google my name shows up on Googles first page ten times on page one

  11. Has this worked for anybody yet ? i did mine over 4 days ago & no email as of yet

  12. Sadly here in the UK I see the message ‘At the moment, the campaign is only available in the Nordics’ for the Norton service. This might explain why people above are not getting verification messages if elsewhere. As others have said, for a name search it’s generally quite cheap to run an ad in Adwords so that might be easier – but this is a nice idea.

  13. KILLER POST Brian! Deffo goin to implement this.
